On 1 October 1949, many of our residents were between 10 and 15 years old. They had survived the Japanese invasion of Nanjing and were about to witness their country’s extraordinary transformation.
Imagine the hope, fear, joy and suffering they experienced over the decades that followed. Their memories make national history personal.
For our residents, the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China was above all a moment to look back with pride and emotion.
Preserving those memories means giving people the space to tell history in their own words and to share what these changes meant in their lives.
