I am very honored to receive the Global Ageing Influencer Award from the Ageing Asia organization this year!

This award triggered some thoughts about what it means to be an “influencer.” Most connected people nowadays would count it in “likes,” “views,” and “followers.” However, I believe we should adhere to the original meaning when it comes to aging: influencing is about putting things in motion, changing mindsets, and challenging frontiers.

We are about to witness a revolution that goes beyond demography: People can receive goods or services delivered at home within minutes. Innovative treatments are giving new hope in the fight against dementia. AI-powered personalized health management can push back the frontier of death by many decades. This is not science fiction. We are already there!

Senior Living can no longer be evaluated along the “quality of accommodation vs. intensity of care” paradigm. Senior Living can be more relevant than ever if it manages to deliver solutions to make life as normal as possible, as good as possible, for as long as possible.

Quality, autonomy, individuality, dignity, mobility, connectivity, socialization, family ties, continuity, inclusiveness, stimulation, fun, etc., shall not be empty words. Each of these words shall be the basis for a clear action plan to reach the expected goal. So yes, it is time to put things in motion.

Am I really an influencer? I don’t know. But I am happy and proud to play a small part in this gigantic project! Let’s add years to life, and most importantly, life to years!

9 years ago, in the middle of my surprise birthday party, I received a very unexpected gift: a call from Dr. Jean-Claude Marian, Founder and then-Chairman of the ORPEA group, now the world’s largest elderly care provider. They had decided to entrust me with the mission to start-up and develop ORPEA in China. I had no experience in intrapreneurship or elderly care, yet I accepted with no reservations. It has been a rollercoaster of challenges, full of emotions, lessons, disappointments, successes, and above all, a lot of fun with the incredible people I met!

9 years later, it is time for me to turn the page and move on to new adventures. Tomorrow will be my last day at ORPEA. I will post later about what’s coming next, but for now, I would like to pay tribute to the fantastic team that has accompanied me throughout this pioneering journey. Together, we have beaten the odds, ignored the pessimists, and achieved many “firsts,” from opening new concept facilities to developing B2B offers and educational programs with prestigious partners.

But above all, we’ve brought smiles, happiness, dignity, autonomy, security, and safety to hundreds of seniors and their families. We have demonstrated that beyond the “need,” there was a “demand” for better quality eldercare, where senior citizens can age comfortably and healthily while preserving their social and family ties, and maintaining their remaining capabilities. We have proven there is a way to adapt to the culture of our residents, without compromising on the strictest standards of quality.

Thank you for everything. I will miss working with you, but I will not forget you, because we will definitely stay in touch!

Over the last 5 years, more than 500 healthcare professionals have graduated from the « Training Program in Elderly Care » jointly organized by the renowned Peking Union Medical College Hospital 北京协和医院 and Orpea China 欧葆庭中国. The 2019 class started yesterday in our Orpea Changsha Care Center, with 80 new students eager to push geriatrics and elderly care towards new frontiers.
